As I embarked on this course “Educational Technology”, I thought to myself, what is reason for doing a course like this as it has no relation to my training here at college and as a teacher facilitator. During the tenure of the course I developed the importance of using different technological tools to foster learning. David Warlick postulated that, “We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.”
In addition to the course, there are various tools that were introduced. These include: the concept map, interactive power point, digital story and movie maker as well as web quest and the building of websites. Firstly, the concept map tool was a bit tedious to manage but after a few attempts, I was able to create one as I deemed it important. This tool is use to assist individuals in summarizing key points of a particular topic.
The next tool was the interactive power point, which allows the teacher to incorporate the students in effectively disseminating the content. Due to the fact that, I am not really computer literate, I still have not mastered it. Therefore, I will have to seek additional help as this is a magnificent tool to use with different types of learners as it will allow them to have a better understanding of the concept being delivered.
On the other hand, I also learnt about the Web Quest which is somewhat similar to a power point and a lesson plan. It allows you to state the main points of a lesson and by adding a few hyperlinks, students will be able to explore additional information. This will assist them in becoming cognitively developed towards education and technology in general. The web quest was also a bit tedious for me but I managed to work my way around it even though, I still have a few flaws.
This course in general has assisted me both cognitively and mentally as I seek to reposition for new frontiers. There are some things that I think should have been disseminated in depth instead of us trying to figure out how to use them. For example, the interactive power point, the web quest and the digital story maker.
On the other hand, it was an interesting course and I must extend my sincere gratitude to our lecturer, Mrs. Delphine Williams-Young who has worked assiduously with us. She was very lenient with us as she tried to give us extensions where necessary and provide effective criticism towards our work. Finally, an unknown author quoted that, “It is not what technology does to us, it is what we do to technology. Get smart with technology, choose wisely and use it in a way that benefits both you and those around you.”
